Who Is This Activity For?

This activity is perfect for toddlers through second grade. It can also be used in occupational therapy, or added to homemade busy binders.

How to Use This Printable

To do this activity, print out the pages on regular printer paper, gather your craft supplies (all you’ll need are some cotton swabs, a paint tray and some washable paint), and let your child paint each of the tiny dots using any paint colours they choose.

Our kids always ask for lots of different colours—this activity really brings out their creativity!

If you are doing this activity with younger kids, you may notice that instead of painting each dot individually, they prefer to paint along the dots as if they were a line, or to paint inside the image.

If they do, that is totally fine—no matter how they choose to paint, they are still getting in some fine motor practice and having fun in the process!

If your child is feeling creative and wants to try something a little different, they can also paint the dots using their fingers, or cover them with small dot stickers or tiny pom-poms. There are lots of fun ways to use this printable, so don’t feel that you have to limit yourself to Q-tips!

How to Print This Activity

Once you have downloaded this free activity, simply print the pages on US Letter-sized (8.5 x 11 inches) paper and hand it over to your kids. (You can make the pages reusable by following the instructions provided below.)

You can also print these sheets on A4 paper, but you may need to adjust the “Scale to Fit” setting on your printer to ensure that none of the printable area is being cut off.

How to Make These Worksheets Reusable

To make these tracing sheets reusable, laminate the pages using a thermal laminator or self-laminating sheets. You can also place the pages inside plastic page protectors or dry erase pockets if you don’t have a laminator at home.

If you do this, you will be able to wipe the paint off the printable pages when your child is done with them, and save them for future use. Just make sure you use washable paint (not acrylic paint) for an easy cleanup!

Why Is Q-Tip Painting Beneficial for Kids?

These Q-tip painting sheets are a great way to help young children work on a variety of important skills, including fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Holding the small Q-tips in their fingers requires kids to use their pincer grasp, which makes it a great activity for toddlers who are learning to hold pencils.

But most importantly? Q-tip painting is a lot of fun for kids, and it encourages creativity and self-expression by allowing them to explore different painting techniques and paint without a paintbrush! Painting with Q-tips is such a fun way for kids to unwind and let their imagination flow.

Can I Use This Printable in My Classroom?

Absolutely! Classroom use is both allowed and encouraged. Use these printable templates as a simple way to help your students work their finger muscles and improve their fine motor skills.
