What is the best filler for homemade stress balls?

Homemade balloon stress balls can be filled with a variety of different fillers, including all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking soda, rice, play dough, oobleck, water beads (you'll want to avoid these in homes with pets or young kids, as they can be dangerous if ingested), moon sand and dried beans.

Each of these fillers has its own unique texture—soft, moldable, crunchy, squishy—so feel free to experiment with different options until you find what you like best. Some of the larger items won't fit through a funnel, so you'll need to add them directly to the balloon, which is a bit trickier to do.

Personally, I prefer powdery fillers like flour or cornstarch because they're easy to pour into a bottle—allowing you to add more to the balloon—and they give the stress balls a squishy, moldable texture. For these balls in this article, I chose to use all-purpose flour because it was the most cost-effective option.

How long do homemade balloon stress balls last?

The lifespan of homemade stress balls depends on the quality of the balloon and on how much they're played with. You should be able to get to get anywhere from a couple weeks' to several months' use out of them.

Thinner rubber or latex will degrade faster, especially if manipulated a lot. If you notice that the rubber is getting thin and/or starting to develop holes, it's probably time to toss that stress ball and make a new one.

You can even split open the balloon yourself and carefully collect the flour in order to reuse it in your next stress ball, which will both reduce waste and save you the trouble of cleaning up the mess when the balloon splits open on its own!

Note: To make your stress balls last longer, you can cut the neck off a second ballon and pull it over the stress ball to create a second layer. This will make it sturdier, but will also make the texture a bit stiffer, so it's up to you whether you want to try it.
