What type of salt is best for salt painting?

Table salt, coarse salt and sea salt can all be used to create a salt solution to paint with. (Just don't use rock salt, as it won't dissolve properly.) The paint will dry differently depending on the type of salt that is used, so feel free to experiment with your kids!

What is the science behind painting with salt?

For this project, you'll need to dissolve salt in warm water and use it to paint. When the paint dries, the water will evaporate, leaving the salt behind—and because salt is white, you'll be able to see it on the black paper. Rather than falling off, the salt, which was pulled into the paper by the water, will turn into tiny crystals that grip the paper's porous surface and cause it to stay in place.
