How to Use This Printable (for Individuals vs Groups)

This activity can be done by one person or many, and the way to do it will differ depending on how many people are participating:

  • One person: Roll the die 4 times to create your writing prompt, then write down your story. This would make a good creative writing assignment for teachers to assign to their students.
  • Several people: Use the same prompt for everyone, or have each player roll the die to create their own unique prompt. Allow some time for everyone to write down the details of their stories, then take turns sharing them out loud.
  • Several groups: Instead of having everyone write their own story, divide the players into small groups and have each group work together to create a story. Once again, you can either use the same prompt for everyone or let each team create its own prompt.
  • One group: Have everyone work together to create a single story based on the prompt you roll. You can even use this as a group activity during your next classroom party!

Younger children, particularly those who haven’t learned how to write, can pair up with an adult in order to complete the game more easily.

How to Create Your Story

To play this writing prompt game, grab the printed sheet and a die. Then, have your child roll the die 4 times to create the unique writing prompt on which they’ll be basing their story.

  • First roll: This roll determines one of the characters in the story. To allow for more creative freedom, the game sheet doesn’t specify whether this character should be the protagonist.
  • Second roll: This roll determines another character in the story. Once again, you are free to use this character as a main character, or to give them a completely different role of your choosing.
  • Third roll: This roll determines the location where the story takes place.
  • Fourth roll: This roll determines a plot element to use in your story. Use it in any way you see fit, including in the exposition or at any point during the rising or falling action.

As you roll, write down these elements and use them to create a unique story that incorporates all four!
