Required Materials
- Baking sheet or dish: I used a glass baking dish for the pictures, but I have also used baking sheets when doing this sort of project. Any shallow dish or tray will do, as long as it’s big enough to accommodate a sheet of cardstock.
- Shaving cream: Make sure you buy shaving foam, not shaving gel. Any brand will do. I usually get the generic one from Walmart, which costs less than $2.
- Coloring: In keeping with the Earth Day theme, you’ll need blue and green. There are actually several options to choose from—liquid food coloring, liquid watercolor paint, and even tempera paint or acrylic paint will all work for this project. I generally use food coloring or liquid watercolor paint.
- Toothpick: You can also use a wooden skewer.
- Cardstock: I really recommend using cardstock for this craft because it is thicker than regular paper and will hold up better once the paint and shaving cream are added. Watercolor paper can also work. I used white cardstock, but you can also use off-white or even light blue, as long as it’s lighter than the food coloring. If you are planning on using the template, you’ll probably want to stick with US Letter format (8.5 x 11 inches), though you can also print it on A4 paper if you tweak your printer settings.
- Spatula: You’ll be using this to scrape the shaving cream off the cardstock. You can also use anything with a long, flat edge that you’re not worried about staining with food coloring.
The full supply list and instructions can be found in the how-to card.

How to Make a Marbled Shaving Cream Earth (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Fill dish with shaving cream. Cover the bottom of your dish or tray with shaving cream.
Step 2: Add coloring. Add some drops of green and blue food coloring to the shaving cream.
Step 3: Swirl with a toothpick. Use a toothpick to swirl the food coloring around and create a pattern.
Step 4: Press cardstock onto shaving cream. Print the template on US Letter cardstock, then press the printed side onto the shaving cream.
Step 5: Scrape off shaving cream. Use a spatula to quickly scrape all the shaving cream off the cardstock, revealing a colorful swirling pattern.
Step 6: Cut Earth template. Use scissors to cut along the lines of template. (If not using the template, simply cut in the shape of a circle.)
This project was so easy to make, and I love the swirling patterns that we created! As a bonus, you can make this craft several times and you’ll end up with a unique result every time, which makes it extra fun for kids.
Helpful Tips
- Press down on the cardstock: Make sure that every part of the template comes into contact with the shaving cream by gently pressing down on the middle and edges of the sheet of cardstock.
- Don’t let the cardstock get too wet: After you have pressed the template onto the shaving cream, scrape it off as quickly as possible to prevent the cardstock from getting too wet, as this can cause the pattern to become blurry. (Using watercolor paper instead of cardstock may help.)
- Play around with the coloring: Try playing around with the quantity of coloring you add to the shaving cream to see what kind of pattern you like best!
