Required Materials

- Balloon: Anything you have at home is fine—I used regular 12-inch latex balloons from the dollar store.
- Paint palette: You’ll need a paint palette with a flat surface large enough to accommodate an inflated balloon. If you don’t have one, you can use a paper, plastic or ceramic plate. (I prefer plastic and ceramic because they can be washed and reused.)
- Paint: You can use washable kids’ paint or acrylic paint for this project. I used washable paint. You’ll need light blue and green to mimic the Earth’s oceans and continents.
- Cardstock: Any light color will work. I used a color called “Stardust White” from this set of colored cardstock, because I liked the little specks of color, but regular white or beige is also fine. If you don’t have cardstock, you can use regular printer paper or construction paper, but it might get wavy when it comes into contact with the paint.

How to Make Earth Day Balloon Prints (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Inflate balloon. Inflate a balloon about halfway, then tie it up to prevent the air from escaping.

Step 2: Pour paint onto paint palette. Pour some blue paint onto a paint palette, then add a few small splashes of green paint on top of the blue paint.

Step 3: Dip balloon in paint. Dip your inflated balloon into the paint.

Step 4: Make balloon prints. Press the paint-covered balloon onto the sheet of cardstock to create a blue-and-green imprint. Repeat as many times as desired to create more prints, adding more paint to the paint palette and dipping the balloon back into it as often as needed. Then, allow the paint to dry fully.
This project was super simple to make, but it was lots of fun, and I think it turned out really cute! I loved how simple the materials were, and the fact that my younger kids were able to participate.

Helpful Tips
- Don’t over-inflate the balloon: To make the balloon easier for your child to handle, make sure to only inflate it about halfway.
- Swirl the paint colors: If you want prints that look like planet Earth, with green continents and blue oceans, start by pouring the blue paint onto the paint palette, then add some green paint on top of it, but make sure that some of the blue paint is still visible.
- Add more paint as needed: For best results, add more paint to the paint palette as often as needed and dip the balloon back into the paint when creating additional prints.
