If your child loves sensory play and you’re looking for new ideas, you’ll definitely want to give this activity a try! This simple moldable sand recipe is made using real sand, and it is the perfect sensory activity for summer.
Grab some sand from your child’s sandbox or from your latest family beach trip, and use it to make this easy DIY play sand that is perfect for kids of all ages. My girls (ages 3, 5, 6 and 8) all had a blast with it!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Easy to make: You’ll only need a few minutes to make this, but your child will be able to play with it for weeks (or possibly months). I love how low-prep this activity is!
- Fun texture: Moon sand has a crumbly texture, but it also holds its shape when pressed. Plus, the addition of actual sand adds a fun textural element to this recipe that regular moon sand doesn’t have.
- Simple ingredients: This recipe only requires 3 ingredients to make, including 2 ingredients that you definitely already have in your pantry (and one that you may have in your backyard).
- Doesn’t dry out: While this play sand may hold its shape in the same way that wet sand does, but you won’t need to wet it in order to play with it. It is that way by design, and won’t dry out over time!

Required Ingredients

- Flour: I used regular all-purpose flour. Since this recipe is not taste-safe, you won’t need to heat treat the flour. Using it straight out of the bag is perfectly fine.
- Sand: We bought a big bag of play sand from the hardware store for our children’s sandbox, and set some aside for this recipe. You can also use sand collected from your latest trip to the beach. If you have any extra, try using it to make a Sand Clay Keepsake, a Sand Foam Sensory Bin or a batch of Sand Play Dough.
- Oil: I used vegetable oil, but you can use another type of oil, like canola oil, olive oil or coconut oil (melted). Because this recipe isn’t taste-safe, baby oil would work too, but you may want to avoid it if you’re not a fan of how it smells.

How to Make Beach Moon Sand (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Combine flour and sand. Pour the flour and sand into a bowl, and stir them together with a spoon.

Step 2: Add oil. Add the oil and stir until combined. If you aren’t able to fully combine the ingredients using a spoon, finish mixing with your hands.
My kids had so much fun with this activity! We decided to add seashells, as well as a small cup that we used to create mounds of sand, but you could even create a sand castle if you have the right mold.

Helpful Tips
- Use dry sand: Make sure the sand is dry when you mix it with the flour. If it’s not, you can speed up the drying process by spreading it on a baking sheet and heating it at your oven’s lowest possible temperature setting (usually 170˚F).
- Choose your batch size: I used 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of sand and ¼ cup of oil, but you can make smaller or larger batches as long as you stick with a 4:1:1 ratio of flour to sand to oil. For instance, you could use 4 cups of flour, 4 cups of sand and 1 cup of oil to make an extra large batch!
- Create a mini beach: While I don’t recommend adding water or blue Jell-O to the moon sand to avoid getting it wet or filthy, you can add seashells, different molds or other sand toys to create a miniature beach.

Moon Sand or Cloud Dough?
Some people refer to moon sand as “moon dough” or “cloud dough”, but we prefer the term “moon sand” because “cloud dough” can also refer to a type of 2-ingredient play dough made using cornstarch and lotion (or conditioner).

Storage Instructions
Place any leftover moon sand in an airtight container or zip-top bag and store it at room temperature until the next time your child is ready to play with it.
