Required Materials

Supplies to make Christmas marbled shaving cream art.
  • Baking sheet or dish: I used a glass baking dish, but a baking sheet is fine too. Any shallow dish or tray that is larger than a sheet of cardstock can work!
  • Shaving cream: Make sure you buy the foam kind, not the gel kind. I usually buy the generic Walmart brand for about $2, and it works great for all the activities we do!
  • Food coloring: I usually use liquid food coloring for this sort of craft, but if you don’t have any, you can use liquid watercolor paint, or even tempera paint or acrylic paint. Just grab whatever is easiest for you! For this craft, you’ll need green, red or brown (depending on which design you choose to create).
  • Toothpick: This will be used to swirl the coloring around. A wooden skewer is also a good option if you don’t have toothpicks.
  • Cardstock: I really recommend using cardstock for this craft because it is thicker and sturdier than regular paper, and will hold up better once it comes into contact with the shaving cream. White cardstock is best—ideally US Letter format (8.5 x 11 inches) to make it easier to print out the template, but you should be able to print it in A4 format by tweaking your printer settings if needed. If you don’t have any cardstock, watercolor paper can work as well, but it may not be great for printing the template.
  • Spatula: This will be used to scrape the shaving cream off the cardstock. Anything with a long, flat edge will do, as long as you’re not worried about staining it.
  • Scissors: Make sure the scissors you use are sharp enough to cut through cardstock. (Plastic safety scissors are unlikely to work.)

Step 6: Cut template. Use scissors to cut along the lines of the template and reveal your Christmas-themed design.

I love how this project turned out! We made a Christmas tree, a candy cane and a gingerbread man, but the template also includes a gingerbread woman for those who want it. Marbled shaving cream art is always a hit with the kids no matter which theme we choose!

Helpful Tips

  • Press down on the cardstock: For best results, every part of the template should come into contact with the shaving cream, as this will allow the color to transfer better. To achieve this, gently press down on every part of the sheet of cardstock during step 4.
  • Don’t let the cardstock get too wet: Once the entire template has come into contact with the shaving cream, make sure to scrape it off as quickly as possible to prevent the cardstock from getting too wet, as this can cause the pattern to become blurry.
  • Play around with the coloring: Don’t hesitate to play around with the quantity of coloring you add to the shaving cream to see what kind of pattern you like best. There is no right answer here, only personal preference!
